3 Models : Studies how signs signify or derive meaning.
C.S.Pierce Model
Ogden and Richard Model
Ferdinand d Saussure Model
Sign has 3 elements: 1.Sign( could be anything: pictorial, word etc.)
2.Which it refer.(Object or external
reality, associated with sign )
C.S.Pierce Model
According to this model , A sign is something
which stands to somebody in some respect or capacity.
Here, in this model three
elements of sign : sign, object and interpret ant, are represented in a
Triangle......in fig,
that are closely related to each other and share equatorial relation.
where the interpretation is based on the mental concepts which the user has based on his experiences, beliefs or convention. Thus it is not fixed, hence social and psychological differences exist.

In the figure, double ended arrows shows
this interrelationship between the
elements. Sign refers to something : Object, and is understood by somebody, i.e., it has an effect into the mind of user-the interpretant.
here, the interpret ant Pierce named it as 'Proper Significate effect': which means, mental concept produced by both sign and use of object.
for example : Sign: a word: SCHOOL
OBJECT : Reality of School is: a place to study till sr. secondary, but that does not provide any technical education.
Interpretant : Mental concept - developed due to the experience of the school.
to elaborate it, if somebody has a bad experience at school, he would form the mental concept in bad light at any time he see a word SCHOOL.
or, somebody get technical education in school, he may develop a mental concept of a school that provide vocational education.
Thus this interpretation is not fixed ( dictionary meaning ).
This understanding is based on the users mental concepts which constitutes its experiences, convention and social-psychological beliefs-perceptions and thus difference lies.
